The American Dialect Society Society has an annual conference, held this year in Boston. They pick words "which have most colored the nation's lexicon, or otherwise dominated the national discourse."
I was incredibly pleased when a mate emailed me about this - because of the winning word in the 'most outrageous' category

This year, the American Dialect Society. Next Year, the OED... Well, that's the plan.
